Benjie has worked as a professional jazz trombonist for many years, often doubling on sousaphone, and primarily in Boston and Phoenix. Over the years, he has worked with artists as diverse as Eric Krasno (funk), KayoDot (metal), the Jokerr (hip-hop), New Guard Big Band (swing), Phoenix Afrobeat Orchestra (afrobeat), and decker (rock). He is a member of the American Federation of Musicians, Phoenix Local 586.

Since 2022, Benjie has turned down most offers to play trombone, except in bands that he leads, in order to prioritize songwriting.
